Sleep, Skin & Selenium: Unlocking the Beauty of Rest

Sleep deprivation doesn’t only affect how you feel—it also shows on your skin. Research suggests that those sleeping fewer than 8 hours per night are less hydrated and may experience a decline in skin elasticity and appearance. A 2020 study of Korean women in their 40s found that just six days of limited sleep significantly decreased skin hydration and elasticity. While skin texture remained relatively unchanged after one night of sleep restriction,  cumulative effects were evident over time.

Meanwhile, selenium plays a key role in helping maintain skin health, protecting against oxidative stress, and supporting skin regeneration (with proper diet and exercise).

The Science Behind Selenium: A Key to PCOS and Infertility in Both Men and Women

A clinical study published by the National Library of Medicine examined 690 infertile men with idiopathic asthenoteratospermia who received selenium (200 μg) and vitamin E (400 units) daily for at least 100 days. The study found a 52.6% improvement in sperm motility and morphology, with 10.8% of cases resulting in spontaneous pregnancy. Selenium may also provide benefits for women with PCOS. A review of seven clinical trials published between 2015 and 2022, as cited by ScienceDirect, suggests that selenium supplementation can serve as an adjunct therapy for PCOS management. The trials concluded that selenium helps reduce lipid peroxidation and inflammation, both of which are common complications in PCOS patients. Additionally, selenium may improve insulin sensitivity, which is crucial for managing metabolic disturbances associated with PCOS.
